Winter Camping Tips

Winter camping can be an advanced and challenging adventure that takes a little more planning than summer camping. Winter camping can be a leisurely affair. Winter camping has its own special allure: the splendid quiet of a forest in winter under the hush of falling snow, the thrill of gliding over ice and snow on skis.

Winter Tents

Tents should be of four-season quality and capable of withstanding wind and heavy snow. There are a range of winter camping tents available and in general it is recommended that you use a tent specifically rated to be a four-season tent. Four season tents typically have stronger poles to hold snow loads. Tent platforms can either be dug out of harder snow or compacted with your snowshoes or skis. Having a breathable inner tent wall with a waterproof fly outside will help reduce condensation in the tent.

Keep sleeping bags close together in the tent. If you happen to be sleeping outside and not in a tent, stay warmer by finding a protected location out of the wind. Consider placing the stove just outside the tent flap, so you can make coffee in the morning without leaving the warmth of your sleeping bag!

For very hardy hedonists, a snow cave can beat a tent (or so they say!).

Winter camping can be a very rewarding sport because it requires an extra level of effort and it brings an entirely new element to the arena of camping. Follow these winter camping tips and you’ll enjoy a great outdoor activity.
